MCAT Question of the Day

  • Q:

    Ancient civilizations in southeast Asia devised an intelligent method for long distance communication. Very long and thin brick roads were placed across a very large distance. Someone at one end could pound on the brick and the sound would travel relatively quickly and acutely to the person at the other end. Such technology was designed to warn of invaders and other issues. A leader of a small nation wants to build such a communication network. Workers report various types of stone: Stone A, when hit, is noted to have a very high pitch. Stone B, when hit, is noted to have a lower pitch. Stone C is a little harder than stones A and B. Stones A and B have relatively the same hardness. If the stones were arranged in a way to show how fast sound would travel through the stone, how would they be arranged?

    A

    C < A = B

    B

    A < B

    C

    A = B = C

    D

    A = B < C
